I spent the morning of the 4th in this fireworks tent
as part of my parental duties to help out the Music Boosters
and Norfolk High School.
After that I took the girls to Sioux City, IA for some
much needed (according to them) shopping time.
That evening I let them do a few fireworks in the alley
at our house in town.
It is extremely dry here
worse than I have ever seen it in NE.
So, Ramzie and I were quite nervous about
starting a fire.
Ramzie shouted out fire warnings constantly.
There was no need for me to say any more.
Our town's main fireworks event is Saturday night.
It is called the Big Bang Boom.
That is our official forth of July,
no matter what day it falls on.
On the farmfront, the heat is taking it's tole.
The grass has given up and gone dormant,
the rabbit has dug himself a hole to lay in,
and one chicken expired in the heat.
When it finally cools off a little in the evening
there is a plethora of activity.
Sage has named herself the alpha female
and the others need to be on the lookout for her
at all times, lest they get butted out of her way.
Sometimes, when I have had enough,
I pen her up separately so the others
can let their guard down for awhile.
She pays it no mind however.
She simply finds other ways of entertaining herself
A good butt scratching is one of her favorite pastimes.

The
came by when we were in Sioux City
and shredded the weeds.
It is a sight to behold.
I think I will finish the fence
and put up the gates.
now that I can see the fence-line : )
This was supposed to be our horse pasture
way-back-when
in the days where hope ran high to get to live here full time.
Sorry folks, but I am having a hard time bouncing back
from this last disappointment.
Maybe it's the heat.
On the positive side
the coons are gone.
But we found another visitor in the shop last night.
A baby possum.
It was kinda cute and kinda not
but didn't merit trapping and relocating (yet).
I hope you all had a wonderful 4th.
This weekend is promising a break in the heat.
I hope it happens for you also.
If you could, please remember my dad in prayer.
He is having some health issues and we will know more next week.

Prayers for your Dad, you and your entire family.
Hang in there, my friend. Never forget you are not alone. *HUGS*
By the way...my bird is a Downy Woodpecker.
i know the heat is not helping you get energized or hopeful about anything. worrying about your father cannot be fun. i do hope he'll be okay.
hope you get some rain, soon. and that possum is adorable (for now) until he starts raiding and destroying...
Enjoy the fireworks! Stay strong, better days are coming:@)
PS-Catch the possum and relocate, please don't wait for him to be a problem. Just the thoughts of a wimpy city girl:@)
Hey, a belated "Welcome" to Iowa! ;) Glad you were able to take the girls shopping.
Oh my goodness, Livie and I think that little dog is SO CUTE!
And Livie thinks the possum is too cute, too. I'm a little less sure about that, because of what they look like as adults.
Have fun watching fireworks! I hope it cools down a bit by then. We were in SWELTERING heat/humidity for our fireworks last weekend.
And of course, I hope it cools down so the flora and fauna can get a break, too.
I love your photo of the land, by the way.
kind neighbours, like blog friends, are there when you need them, and I send all caring thoughts with wishes for health to come to your Dear Dad. The weeding did wonders, hope the celebrations go safely. Cheers from Jean.
Michaele, I hope you get some relief soon. We haven't lost anything yet, but it was close yesterday. I'll remember your dad in my prayers now... I hope he has good news. Trap that baby possum... they're trouble!
I hope there is a break in the heat. It looked like you had a nice 4th. And that baby raccoon is so cute! Love, sandie
Hope those temps come down and some rain... that possum is cute!
sorry to hear about your dad's health issues, i said a prayer for him now. i loved both videos, but the one of Sage scratching had me laughing so hard, i had trouble reading the rest of your post. that is just about the cutest video ever. she is a real trip. that little ugly possum is adorable.we saw one a little bigger than this in the middle of the road last week, 5:30 am we stopped and the silly goose just sat there, i said ok this is NOT the time to play possum and he finally waddled out of the road. do possums kill chickens? like the coons?
I am sending your dad good thoughts. You as well. I understand not bouncing back too quickly, when you think you've got a solution to a problem, even though your rational mind tells you not to get attached or put your eggs in one basket, your emotions go and do it anyway. At least, that's what I always find for me. Brain doesn't talk to heart.
The possum is cute, I don't think they kill chickens, but they do steal eggs. They might go for small chickens, though. Just be careful!
Thinking of you right now. Hoping all will be well soon.
Relocate that possum asap - they (and their teeth and appetite) grow fast.
Speaking from experience... xo
Putting your Dad in my prayers
I hope your dad gets to feeling better and I hope things start looking up for selling the house in town. I agree with the others, relocate that cute little 'possum before it grows up!!
