I am not bound for any public place, but for ground of my own where I have planted vines and orchard trees, and in the heat of the day climbed up into the healing shadow of the woods. Better than any argument is to rise at dawn and pick dew-wet red berries in a cup. ~Wendell Berry

Disbudding Sucks
Alternate post titles:
I Hate Being A Responsible Goat Owner
Why I Am Switching To Raising Sheep
I Would Rather Stick A Needle In My Own Eye
It Never, Ever Gets Any Easier
PETA Would Have Me Arrested
I BURNED MY BABY
He is sooooo unhappy with me.
I wouldn't come out from under there if I were you either.
In a month or so I will be applying a castrating band to your testicles
and you will have to wear it until they fall off.
Oh poor guy....ok, don't laugh...but this is why I took mine to the vet to have both done....he actually neutured my boys like a dog....I know, crazy right?
Being the responsible adult is always tough. You did the right thing. It is a horrible mess if they break their horns off later or get hung up on something.
I am curious though about why you have to wait a month to castrate. The sheep and calves can be done very early, are goats different?
I truly think that we have to be made of iron to do some of the things we have to do. Yeah, I think it sucks too. I haven't done it yet, but I will be doing it next year. And I know I will feel the same.
Smart boy to hide under the wheelbarrow, though. I think we've got to give him that.
I did it ONE time and only one side took. If I ever decide to disbud again, there is a lady who lives close by that I will take them to. We banded last year for the first time, I prefer just cutting them like a calf, then it's done.
You are a stronger woman than me. I couldn't do it -- had them disbudded before I got them and had a neighbor do the banding. It's one of the reasons I haven't bred Bella. I'm such a chicken/wimp.
It is best that you disbudded the little fellow. So cute hiding. Though it is hard and stinky. The little goats do forget quickly. I would take them to the vet to be castrated. A lady in OK told me her vet only charges her $25. I don't think I will ever find it that cheap. Haven't had to do that yet.
I would love to be "against" disbudding, but 2 scenarios have made me a (cringing) believer. Our friend's goat climbed a tree, hooked her horns between branches and broke her neck, and a neighbor's goat stuck it's head through the fence, couldn't pull back through because of the horns, and perished to a predator. Both were gruesome and awful finds for the owners. If I ever raise goats, they will be disbudded.
Way to go for Cowboyin up & getting the job done... I'm taking the easy way out & takin my 6 babies to the vet, letting him be the bad guy, I do have to help hold them down.

I'm so glad I don't disbud my babies!
I hate the smell!
Look at him all hidden in there. Poor baby.

Sounds rough for both of you! Yikes!
Poor li'l guy. No wonder he's hiding! (But at least the disbudding is DONE, right?)

Love all of your titles.

P.S. Poor little guy and poor YOU!! {{HUGS}}
Okay here's me again - what is debudding? Taking the horns off? Then the testicles? That sounds rough. sandie
Not a fun part of the deal.
Tails and testicles on the agenda for Sun. - do so hate it. In the past I've given them a baby aspirin which seemed to help. ~ Marcia

I wouldn't be able to do it.

Yikes! Farm life is hard! But we know how much you love your critters:)

the title could be
"the joys of a goat ranch" or sheep ranch.
I hate that part too.
OUCH for both of you!

Oh my gosh, the one thing that holds me back from goats, and I AGREE no horns is best!
I totally agree!

Ah, this was great!! Thanks for the good laugh!! I have to "help" my husband with these with the calves, so your alternate names were GREAT!! :)
