Firsts

What if you were a chicken,
and you had spent the entire first three months of your life
in a box?

Never felt the earth under your feet,

the sun on your back
or the wind in your feathers?

Can you imagine your first trip out doors?

Do you think you might just decide to sit right down
and not move?
Did you know chickens can sit down?

Yes, Sparkle and Shine got to go outside today.

Not only that,
they got put in a pen with a goose and a turkey.

Now, how the heck did that work, you ask?

Because the goose

and the turkey,

had never been in the pen before either.

So, no one was boss,
no one was king,
no one was "in charge".
There was no pecking order.

It was all new,
for everyone,
and everyone got along.

Confusion works wonders in the bird world.

Keep this in mind folks,
next time you want to introduce new birds into a flock.
If possible - move all the birds to a new area.
By the time they all get it figured out -
they will have forgotten all about the new guys.

And that is how
you can get birds
 of the same feather

or not,

to flock together.

Get outside and get some wind under your wings this weekend friends : )

That chicken sitting there cracks me up! I've never seen one sitting before.

I giggled through this whole post and I NEEDED this today. Thanks!

I so like to see the hens photos. We bought some cage hens many years ago, poor things, they didn't know what dirt was, laid their eggs right off the perch, letting them fall onto the ground, feathers few and straggly, but soon they thrived.great idea to move all newcomers and residents together to new areas. Cheers from Jean.

The picture of them all together looks like a Disney movie or part of a nursery rhyme. So cute

Beautiful chickens, are they bantams? They look so small next to the goose and the turkey!
I will have to remember this for the next time I need to introduce new chickens into the flock! :)

Oh I love this your pics are the best. I myself look forward to getting outside if only for a little while no one deserves to stay in the house or their box when it is so nice out. Take care M hugs B

Michaele, I read your post late last night, but didn't have the presence of mind to write an understandable comment and decided to wait until this morning. ;)

So happy all of your babies are getting along -- makes all the difference, I think. Great advice. Enjoy this beautiful weather today and thanks so much for sharing at Rural Thursday.
