Chicks and Chillas

 It's that time again.

I call them my "sweet little fuzzy-butts".

And for your viewing pleasure -
here is Sofia taking a dust bath.

If Sofia were in the wild, she would be bathing in volcanic ash.  It is very important for chinchillas to take a dust bath to clean their very dense coat.  Their fur collects oils and moisture which the dust will absorb.  Chinchillas should never have a water bath. The dust that we got from the pet store is calcium carbonate.

I love your chickies, and Sofia, they do have thick dense coats. When I was young, about 10 or so, the corner store in our small town of Papakura, South Auckland, had the front window full of yellow chicks, at an Easter Thursday night, Lights to keep them warm, and I guess they all went home somewhere else at night.Your photo brought back gthat memory so vividly. Ta so much, Cheers from Jean

Chinchillas are pretty darn neat! Don't know much about them at all...cool. On baby chicks, I ordered a batch from McMurrays for May. I better get that addition for the coop built!! It'll be here before I know it...YIKES!

Do you raise Chinchillas for harvest?

I knew a family who did.

I'm guessing, it is a pet, hoping, it is a pet.
