Too Late Now

I took one of my 16 year old twins to the college yesterday to register for an upcoming Certified Nurses Assistance class.  She has been wanting to take this class for a while now.  We tried to sign her up last year, but she needed to be 16 to take the certification test, so they recommended waiting.  She applied for admission and registered for the class. I wrote the check and then we went to the bookstore.  We got the huge book and happily went to the car.  On the way home, I told her that she should start reading the book early and get a jump start on the class.  She randomly opened the book to some where about a third of the way through.  I glanced over and the chapter was entitled 'Cleaning the Male Perineal'.
Lord help me, I have no idea how I get through life with the blinders I wear.

I was 16 when I enrolled in the CNA class and 16 when I had to do my first male bed bath for an elderly nursing home patient. I somehow got through it, and to be honest, I was so set on my job at hand, I didn't pay attention or either blocked out what I thought was uncomfortable moments. After caring for a few patients - everyone's hind parts looked the same to me and I didn't feel uncomfortable.

Now, speaking from the point of view of the mother of a daughter close in age to your daughter, I can imagine the feeling you had when you saw that page in the book.
Bless your heart.

My Goodness!! I think/KNOW I would have your same thoughts. Yikes..16?? My mind would be whirling, but then again I think your daughter sounds like a pretty capable young gal who'll prove she can do it. You raised her right and I applaud you for looking forward...even if you have blinders on!!

It only gets better. If she goes on to become a nurse she will learn how to put objects in body cavities and all sorts of fun skills. Sorry Mom. Nursing always has openings for jobs. I have been doing it for 26 years now. Never been laid off or had a hard time getting a job. Sometimes its sad and gross but there are those days when you really feel appreciated. Good luck.

LOL...I was a Nurses Aid (no certification back then where I lived)when I was 19. I loved my job except for jobs like that. I had no idea what I was getting into when I first applied for the job...I learned it all HANDS ON so to speak ;) All the best to your daughter and you hang in there Mom :) Have a wonderful Wednesday!

I have taught a few CNA classes and am reminded of one student who dropped out saying, "I didn't know I had to see naked people." As a fresh grad out of nursing school, I learned so much from seasoned nursing assistants.

Wow, a whole chapter on that?!?

Reason #341 why I've never had any desire to be a nurse.
