You showed the behavior of Brown-headed Cowbirds perfectly. Those birds are mostly nomadic and followed the bison herds in the past.

And many of the Icterids, or birds in the black bird family, congregate in large numbers like that in the fall and winter for feeding.Most of those birds are male and female brown-headed cowbirds with a starling or two thrown in the group. Other birds that congregate like that in large numbers during the winter are Robins and Sparrows.

ah funny! Those are beautiful pictures. Apparently any equine will work as well. I found bird poo all over my mare's back last weekend when I was checking in with her.
